Pte Jaco van Gass at Flannels 4 Heroes with Kevin Peterson

On Friday 24th June, I attended ‘Flannels 4 Heroes’ which was a 20:20 cricket tournament to raise money for Walking With The Wounded and Help the Heroes and what an amazing day that was.  For full details you can check out the website

At this event, Pte Jaco van Gass, a sniper in the Paras shared with the guests his first hand experience of his time in Afghanistan and the injuries he received when hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and those who were their will know that it brought tears to many eyes.  But, it was the strength of this 26 year old which came through and his determination to carry on.   Not only did he play cricket but he skied for the army and took part in this amazing ultimate Arctic challenge in -50 temperatures.

I can’t wait to see the programme which will be shown on the BBC 1 on Tuesday 23rd August at 9pm as the strength of these four soldiers who were wounded serving for their country is unbelievable and the support that is evident from Prince Harry.  I will certainly need a box of tissues I think!

There are also two amazing You Tube video you can watch put together by the Press Association and

Lastly to end, may I wish Jaco van Gass the best of luck in the expedition in May 2012 to climb Mount Everest again with Walking With The Wounded.
